My coping tips would be first a strong belief in God, that gets me
through most of it! Others are getting enough sleep, finding something
to do that keeps me feeling useful in the world, such as writing
senators for more vestibular research funding, and having a good cry
when I feel like it! :)

Meniere's since 2/92. Symptoms at first were short episodes of
vertigo/double vision. I have had over 200 of episodes. Taken many
meds. What seemed to work best until 2/92 was Diamox and Inderal.
Now, nothing is working and I am having drop attacks and constant
dizziness. Sac Decompression surgery recommended by Johns Hopkins.
Anyone with experience? Please E-Mail me. Life is changing more than
I can handle some days.

I feel it's important to learn as much as possible about dizziness and
balance disorders, in order to cope with them better. Also, join the
Vestibular Disorders Association (VEDA), and get on the "Link List"
for your state/country. Get involved with a local support group - or
start one yourself, if none exists. (The link I've provided here is
for the group I started in western New York State.) Do as much as you
can, when you can.

I have developed vertigo/dizziness as another symptom of CFS/ME. The
attacks which occur once or twice weekly are extremely debilitating and
frightening - especially if they occur in public. I am now loathe to
go out on my own. I am now being investigated by a hospital consultant
and will have an MRI next week plus various balance tests. I hope
that things will work out. I am taking SERC.

Whenever I mention this to anyone they always make a joke of it. I
usually joke back a little too but this condition does bother me and I
want to feel normal and energetic like I'm used to. It comes in spells
about every other month, more or less, and it lasts for a week or more;
especially in the morning, in the shower, and any quick sudden
movements up/down -(getting in/out of bed).I've taken Meclizine but I'm
already feeling fatigued and this makes it worse.

Been suffering from vertigo, imbalance, sea sickness since 10-12-93.
Went to bed normal on the 11th and woke up with the room spinning on
the morning of the 12th. Doctor said it was nerve damage to my inner
ear caused by a virus. Tried physical therapy and many meds. Still have
it every single day. Life was totally changed overnight. Day to day

The first instance of dizziness occurred several years ago when I woke
up in the morning. I could not move for more than an hour without
getting dizzy and nauseous. I also have had a less extreme version of
this dizziness periodically (about once a year) for the past three
years. It just happened again and has been with me for about a couple
weeks. I now get dizzy with only certain head movements. I'm taking
earwax medicine and occasionally Advil for accompanying headache.

I've had vestibular neuritis, off an on, since '89. I've tried just
about everything, some things worked for me, and some didn't. Noone
seems to mention using ginger root, which has helped me many times.
Doctors seem hesitant to believe in it, but I know many who've been
helped. Just ordinary ginger root. Make a tea out of it, or do like I
do and just put a good size pinch under the tongue and then after a
few minutes wash it down with some water. Ginko extract seems to help

I have tried the echinacea and it worked once but not so well the second
time. I read about Claritin D. It is not available in Canada but I
just tried Claritin's 24 hour non drowsy formula for the attack I had
this week and it seems to be working well. Pharmacist says it is
alright to use on an ongoing basis.

Hi. Have to make this short. In Dec. I was fine one day until after I
blow dried my hair. I then got extremely dizzy and started vomiting
twenty minutes later. It laste a little more than a day. A week
later, same thing. Went to ER told me it was an inner ear virus (what
is that anyhow?) Went away, been gone for months, now, in April, I'm
starting to get these headaches with constant ear pressure and
dizziness? Any of this sound familiar? Please Help.

Hi. I'm 26 and I have BPPV. It sucks, but I've also learned to laugh
at myself. I'm seeing an occupational therapist for vestibular
rehabilitation and I am getting better. If there is anyone out there
who wants to e-mail about how they are feeling, treatment options, etc.
please write me. I'd love to connect with others that also suffer from
dizziness, fatigue, and that vague "out of it" feeling that we get.
Take care and remain hopeful. Anne

To add to previous note, I would suggest everyone with Vertigo to get
complete blood work done(lyme, diabites, etc), get cat scan and mri done.
At least this will eliminate some of the few thing Dr can do.My
experience is holistic can help but there are no cures.Mecklize and ves
therapy can help some but did not for me. Major ear surgery is no
guarantee. Find a Dr who specializes in vertigo or you wil get the
usual,"There is nothing you can do". They might be RIGHT! Good luck!

I was astounded to see as many people in the same boat as I. Annual
bouts of dizzy spells for last 20 years lasting 1-3 wks. at a time.
Latest bout developed instantly when I tilted my head back to drain the
last few drops of a soft drink. Went to an ENT once who found nothing.
It appears that homeopathic and chiropractic treatments offer the most
promise. Would appreciate hearing from you especially if you had
positive results from some form of treatment or therapy.

What can be the cause of so many of us having this same vertigo? After
reading all these comments I have to think that none of it has been
caused by "bridge work" or "an airplane ride". This is striking people
randomly all over the world. Could it be left over biological warfare
or some environmental cause? Why don't doctor's have any answers, they
are seeing enough cases of it? And why are they handing out anti-

Chalk one more up to the list. My docotor has just suggested that I may
have a vestibular problem (vertigo). After reading all your responses,
I now know he is correct. I have had all the lightheaded, spacey,
drunken, off-balance, tired, wobbly, panicky feelings for several
months now and maybe longer. Not sure how it started. Just know it
isn't going away. No "spinning" though. Just prescribed 25 mg of

to high doses of Gentamicin. Have "bouncy vision" everytime head

compensate for inner ear loss, as there are two other points to
balance--eyes and feet), but could take 6 months to a year. Interested

Vestibular rehabilitation does help. Don't give up. If you are looking
for more information or a good doctor (not one of those who has no clue
and gives you antivert or prozac), check out the Vestibular Disorders
Association (VEDA) website: http:/www.teleport.com/~veda I have had
days when I couldn't stand up long enough to brush my teeth.
Yesterday, I went on a two mile hike. I do exercises twice a day and
see an O.T. every 2 or 3 weeks. Stay hopeful. It helps.

He spent 4 months in the hospital - he had a horrible leg infection and
had to be on Gentemicin - end result, ototoxicity. He is having a
very difficult time dealing with the vertigo/dizziness. We were told
there are no medications that help - vestibular therapy sometimes
makes the condition worse. Specialist told him all he can do is

Here are a few practical coping tips that have really helped me:
1)avoid flourescent lights as much as possible. if you have to be
under them, wear a baseball cap or sunglasses. 2)if you wear contacts
and have jumpy eyes, switch to glasses. try to get lenses that are
anti-reflective. 3)get an anti-glare screen for your computer. 4)get
plenty of sleep and nap when possible. 5)avoid caffeine and alcohol.

There is therapy for certain types of dizziness. Don't give up and
don't settle for a dr. that says it will just go away. If you have
BPPV, the Epley and Semont manuevers can work wonders. If you have
occasional episodes where the dizziness lasts for a week and goes away,
you still should be in therapy. I had occasional episodes for 5 years.
Then, one came and never went away (8 months now). My therapist says
I would not have the problems I have now if I had had therapy in the

I'm 44 and in my third month of fighting symptoms. Woke up one morning
with dizziness. Diagnosed with BPPV and the therapist did the Epley
maneuver and the spinning has gone away. Still, I'm left with a foggy
headed feeling I can't shake and is very difficult to deal with
continuously. Anyone have similar and have success getting rid of being
in a fog? Anyone try Gingko herb for this? Would chiropractor help? As
with everyone, I'm a bit desperate.

God Gracious - is everyone in the world dizzy? I can't believe all these

been back in full force for a year. I walk like a drunk person and
hang on to walls. Can't drive except around my small town. Sudden

I woke up one morning dizzy and ill. My life has not been the same. I
didn't have a clue what was wrong. I finally went to the emergency room
2 days later. From then on it was a series of test and the treatment
ranged from a virius to a brain tumor. Don't give up hope, I finally
went to an ENT in Houston. He assured me I wasn't crazy and didn't
have a tumor. I was sent to theraphy and had remarkable recovery.

I want you all to do a little experiment. Do a search on the web for
cancer, di abetes, aids, heart disease and vertigo. You will get

what sort of attention the medical profession has given to this curse

Well, after almost a month of no vertigo, I am starting to experience
some dizziness. I've been awake since 4am. I woke up and suddenly
felt a lightheadedness while I had my eyes closed. Sort of like being
dizzy without the vertigo. That triggered anxiety and of course
couldn't go back to sleep. Has anyone felt like they were dizzy but
with no vertigo? It was the strangest feeling and made me panic!

away yet. The 'merry-go-round' feeling is always with me and has not
really got that much better despite 4 months off work (with

'bouncing' vision, tightening of muscles in legs (and weakness), hand
tremour, hungover feeling. If anyone has similar symptoms you are
